Chief executive of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg claims that the social network became a “mobile company” in 2012.
In the fourth quarter, the number of members accessing the website from a handset outweighed those logging on through a computer for the first time.
As a result, the proportion of advertising revenue made through these means increased by nine percentage points compared to the previous three-month period, reaching 23 per cent.
The number of monthly active mobile users climbed by 57 per cent across 2012 to reach an impressive 680 million.

The social networking tool has been downloaded more than 100 million times by Android device owners, according to Google Play.
Following success of these specially designed apps, the company has also released complementary Messenger and Poke tools.
Users are therefore provided with a number of ways to communicate and share with friends and family for free using an internet connection.
