The Windows Phone 8 operating system will feature the popular Instagram application.
Instagram has been in the public eye since it was acquired by Facebook earlier this year for approximately $1 billion (£623 million).
The app allows users to take photographs, add filters to change the look and then upload them to share with friends. Sharing capabilities may be further improved since Instagram is now owned by the biggest social network in the world.
It has been a hit, especially amongst younger smartphone users, so handsets featuring the Microsoft operating system could see increased interest. Mobile phone manufacturers HTC, Samsung and Nokia have already unveiled handsets which utilise Windows 8 software.
Android device owners can get the free photo-sharing application from Google Play. When it was first released in April, it received over one million downloads within 24 hours.
Instagram is also available on the Apple App Store, where it has featured as the number-one free application.
