Facebook has announced the launch of a new app for smartphone users – Notify.
This is based on the premise that the social network's notifications are becoming one of the main methods by which people learn about things that are happening in their day-to-day lives.
Notify is intended to deliver timely notifications that can be tailored by the user to include just the things that matter to them most – from upcoming events to friends' birthdays.
The app includes dedicated channels for everything from sports and celebrities to news, movies, music and shopping.
This is intended to make it easier for those who receive a lot of notifications to streamline their usage to make the app as efficient as possible.
Examples of stations include Final Scores from Fox Sports, which will periodically update with the latest news on your favourite sports teams.
Daily AM Forecast from The Weather Channel will send the latest weather updates to the user's smartphone, while the likes of CNN's Breaking News and Top Stories from Fox News will present the latest general news updates.
Entertainment buffs will find they are catered for with the latest film trailers from Fandango and Vogue's 10 Best Dressed station.
Culture aficionados may prefer the Flashback station from Getty Images, which displays iconic imagery from this day in history. Notify can even help you relax with Headspace's Daily Meditation exercises.
The user will be able to create their own personalised notification mix from these sources and more – and customise whether these notifications are presented as banners on the lock screen or more discreetly.
