Owners of mobile phones may be wondering whether recycling their Apple, Nokia or LG handset qualifies them as a "good citizen" in the opinion of one expert.
Mike Webster, spokesman for Waste Watch, says people who do their bit for the environment by recycling can hold their heads high.
Throwing away reusable materials in a green way is simply "part and parcel of being a good citizen", he suggests.
This could include the disposal of mobile phones, perhaps shortly after the purchase of the latest model.
According to recent research by the Local Government Association, the UK is approximately eight years away from filling its capacity of landfill sites unless a significant increase in recycling can be achieved.
Disposing of a mobile phone in an environmentally-friendly way could go some way towards meeting this target.
The association also noted the country remains the worst in Europe for recycling, with more waste sent to landfill than in any other nation.
