The next stage for mobile phones looks like it could be digital radios, a surprising departure from current technology.
At the moment, most mobile phones feature FM radio as standard. However, recent comments by an industry professional suggest that DAB chips could well come with handsets instead.
Sir Hossein Yassaie, CEO of Imagination Technologies, said: “The next big stage is the penetration of digital radio technology into mobile devices.”
This is despite the fact that the UK is not switching over to digital radio due to a lack of digital listeners.
Sir Hossein said that current technology “is ready to facilitate” this move to DAB radio, however there are still barriers.
He added that there was a need for “global standards support, low power and low cost” in order to move DAB technology over into the mobile phone world.
