The mayor of London has called for more people in the capital to adopt the “common sense” practices of recycling and reusing.

Boris Johnson noted that Londoners need to take “practical action” to cut down on the amount of waste they produced and suggested that recycling items – like mobile phones – that would otherwise be “chucked away” may be a good place to start.

Speaking ahead of an announcement which is set to see £12 million in funding approved by the London Waste and Recycling Board to construct a new eco-friendly energy facility, the mayor also praised the Recycle for London Scheme.

Under the initiative, a further £5 million is expected to be invested during a three-year period to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill in the capital in advance of the 2012 Olympics.

Recycle for London highlights the importance of mobile phone recycling on its website. It claims that there are up to 15 million unused or unwanted handsets in the UK, many of which could release toxic components into the ecosystem if they are not disposed of in the proper way.
