A BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) update will allow users to make free voice calls to others with compatible devices.
BBM is one of the major attractions to a Research in Motion (RIM) mobile phone, as it allows owners to send text messages for free.
An additional Voice feature means that consumers will now be able to talk using the free service, provided they are connected to the internet over a Wi-Fi signal.
There is also the capability to chat and send messages at the same time, so users could share and discuss a photograph or keep certain statements private.
BlackBerry handset owners will also be able to multi-task while using BBM Voice, so they could talk to a colleague and read the associated email.
RIM is expected to release its latest BlackBerry 10 (BB10) operating system at the end of January, and handsets utilising the software may also be equipped with the new BBM feature.
