Mobile phone recycling could be one of the beneficiaries as people around the world begin to ditch old models in order to snap up the most hi-tech devices.
New research by Ovum has found that one of the major attractions to consumers is now apps, with the market for such tools for feature phones set to double in the next five years.
It suggested that apps for feature phones are following in the footsteps of those for smartphones, which are extremely popular with users.
Nick Dillon, analyst at Ovum and author of its new report, said: "Inspired by the success of apps in the smartphone market, the options have improved drastically, with many larger handset manufacturers, operators and third parties now offering improved distribution programmes for feature phones."
Consumerchoices.co.uk recently advised people to switch off their apps while they are not in use in order to minimise the data they are consuming and thus potentially paying for.
