The Retina displays in Apple's iPhones have helped the mobile phones get much higher screen resolution, with improved clarity. However, Apple isn't content with that, as new reports suggest that the company is trying to better the screens.
According to four new applications sent to the US Patent and Trademark Office, spotted by Patently Apple, Apple is planning to combine quantum dots with the company's microelectromechanical systems.
The patent documents say that quantum dots could give a way of enhancing the color gamut of displays. Quantum dot screens can emit a much narrower and more specific spectrum of light, instead of leaking out light and washing out colours like the current displays.
Other than improving its screen colour, the other patents indicate that Apple could be improving the backlight with the same quantum dots. However, the Cupertino company wouldn't be the first to bring this technology as Amazon already uses it in the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7.
