The latest update to the Apple iPhone operating system (OS) is to feature an integration of the Facebook app into other software on the device.

Fans of Facebook will be able to use the app more often when the new version comes out for OS 4.0, as it will enable features such as merging Facebook contacts into the iPhone’s address book system.

It is also believed that Facebook Connect, which allows third-party sites to include Facebook log-ins, could be made open to developers so they can add social networking capabilities to their apps.

will reveal more information about OS 4.0 at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco next month and it is expected that the firm will introduce a wide range of features to provide competition to its rivals, the Google Android and HTC Desire.

The Apple iPhone already offers a multi-touch interface, a widescreen display for watching films and YouTube clips and fast wireless internet connections using Wi-Fi and 3G.
