Philips has developed a green light bulb which Apple iPhone owners will be able to control using a mobile phone application.
More people are attempting to reduce their environmental impact by recycling and reducing energy consumption.
These new bulbs utilise 20 per cent less energy than the conventional type, which also means that the user's electricity bills are decreased.
Owners of iOS devices who purchase the bulbs from an Apple retailer will be able to download the Philips Hue application from the App Store.
Users will then be able to control the colour and brightness of bulbs whenever they have an internet connection, meaning they can turn on lights to deter burglars while away.
Buyers will also be able to choose from a set of scenes designed to mimic lighting like that at the beach, during a sunset or on the ski slopes.
A starter pack, which includes three bulbs and the internet connection kit, will put customers back £179, and additional bulbs cost £49.
