Apple has emailed official invitations for an event taking place on September 12th.
Invitations say 'It's almost here' and show a shadow of a '5' coming from the '12' which represents the date – heavily hinting that the much anticipated iPhone 5 will be unveiled at this time.
The event will take place at 10:00 local time (18:00 GMT) at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, where Apple previously launched products like the iPad and iPad 2.
The new phone is expected to run iOS 6, which Apple announced in June of this year.
The company states that users will benefit from improvements to the "intelligent personal assistant" Siri, more Facebook integrations, the ability to share photographs, FaceTime over cellular networks and much more.
The iPhone 4S has just this month been topped by the Samsung Galaxy S3 in US sales charts, according to reports. The uSwitch mobile tracker shows that the Android handset is outperforming the Apple device in the UK, too.
This could be because users are waiting for the new iPhone, which was expected to be released this autumn in line with Apple's usual schedule.
