According to a study from O2, seven out of ten small firms now incorporate smartphones into their practices and the popularity of the various applications they offer can be seen in data traffic figures.
The carrier states the recent London tube strikes were responsible for a ten per cent network increase as workers turned to their latest phones for real-time transport information.
In addition, the survey notes sites like Twitter and Facebook have seen as many as 48 per cent of people using their device to log on to the web at least once a day.
Simon Devonshire, head of small business marketing at O2, said: "The use of social networking as a means of keeping and growing business is also a trend that we predict will continue to grow."
