Those who choose to sell a mobile or two might find that their best options when it comes to finding a replacement are models that run on the Android operating system.
Michael Morgan, senior analyst for mobile devices at ABI Research, said the platform has made a huge leap forward in recent times.
He noted that its market share in the second quarter of 2010 was 18 per cent, but it has now risen to 47 per cent, emphasising its superiority to many of its rivals.
“It got picked up as an alternative to the Windows Phone and it has also had very good success with consumers. It was essentially the only viable competitor to iOS,” explained Mr Morgan.
Another reason for its success is Android’s ability to link itself to a number of original equipment manufacturers, giving consumers plenty of options should they want one of its phones.
At the other end of the scale, ABI Research found Symbian’s market share dropped to 17 per cent over the same period.
