More than four-in-five smartphone owners claim that they could not go for 24 hours without using an app, with 57 per cent saying that their email tool is "critical".

Almost a third of respondents to apigee research had a more crucial reason for using handset tools on a daily basis: they use their mobile phone in place of an alarm clock.
